9 bizarre and ridiculous laws about animals

Law enforcers around the world have come up with some pretty strange rules to keep citizens and their animals in check. While some merely seem outdated, others are baffling enough to make you wonder why they ever existed in the first place. We’ve scoured the records to find some of the world’s weirdest animal laws (Spoiler: most of them are in America).

9. Flamingos aren’t allowed in barbershops

If you live in Juneau, Alaska you’d better keep your pet flamingo out of the barbers, as it’s totally illegal to bring one inside. Now where are you gonna go when your exotic wading bird needs a trim?

8. No fishing while sitting on a camel

In early 20th century Idaho, bringing your camel fishing and using him or her as a seat would have been considered bang out of order.

7. Horses must be restrained from eating fire hydrants

Seriously now, who’s been letting their trusty steed eat all the fire hydrants? Apparently it’s such an issue in Iowa that they’ve had to make a law forbidding it.

6. Kangaroo boxing is an illegal sport

Get caught fighting a kangaroo while in Myrtle Creek, Oregon and you might end up in the slammer. You’d probably lose, anyway: those feisty marsupials have a hell of a kick.

5. No lions in the cinema

Someone must have mistaken that lion roaring at the beginning of MGM films as an invitation to bring big cats into movie theatres. Maryland state law rightly forbids such foolhardy behaviour.

4. Don’t push a moose out of an aeroplane

Another law to reign in those wacky Alaskans (we’re sure they’re a sensible bunch really): shoving a moose out of a flying aeroplane is a punishable offence. Rightly so, we reckon. Anyone who attempts to get one of these belligerent antlered ungulates into a cramped cockpit is asking for trouble.

3. Handsome horses only

The town of Wilbur in Washington must be filled with beautiful broncos, because riding an ‘ugly’ horse here is a finable offence.

2. Don’t tie your giraffe to a telegraph pole

You’d think being the tallest land animals on Earth would prevent giraffes from getting lost. But apparently it’s a real problem for the people of Georgia, as there’s a law preventing them from tying giraffes to telegraph poles and street lamps.

1. It’s legal to own a tiger in America

With over 10,000 tigers and other big cats in private ownership across America, there is little to no regulation in place preventing people from owning these wild animals. This is probably the stupidest rule of all: it means there are more rare tigers locked away in rich Americans’ backyards than there are roaming free in Asia. Not cool guys, not cool.
